DERBY.

Dear Robotham,

Regarding chromium plating at the top of cylinder bores; we are just stripping our first long mileage job done on this basis, the mileage being 60,178 miles. The last time we inspected this car at something over 40,000 miles, there was still 1" to 1/2" of chromium left at the top of the bores. We actually put on rather more than you suggest, the amount being at least .0005" on radius, this, as I think you know, we plate into a parallel cylinder bore, so that to start with the bore is about .001" smaller at the top than elsewhere, and the plating has been made to taper to nothing in about 2 1/2".

It may seem terrible to you to start an engine with bores tapering in this way, but when you realise that they will surely get tapered quite this much in the other direction in the ordinary way in a very small mileage, it does not seem nearly so bad, and in practice it seems to work out very well.

If you are interested when this cylinder block comes out, you could have a look at it. We hope this will about coincide with our ability to produce a magnetic gearbox for your inspection, so perhaps you could manage to pay us a visit in a week or two, I will let you know later when the gearbox has progressed a little further.

Yours sincerely,

M C Wilks
