Policy for fitting wearing plates to rear springs on 'O' series cars.

KNOCKING OF REAR SPRINGS ON AXLE ROLLERS. AND FITTING OF WEARING PLATES. We attach hereto a copy of letter sent by R.R. of America Inc. to CJ. As you are aware, the position is that these wearing plates were standardised for "O" series, and the standardisation sheet was completed on March 7th. Since which date no "O" series cars have been delivered unless the wearing plates were fitted, although cars have frequently been delayed for supplies. You will remember that it was arranged some time prior to this date, in view of the number of complaints received, that we should fit these plates in cases of actual complaints from customers. At the time the plates were standardised we pressed for a decision as to what should be done in regard to cars prior to "O" series, and at our instigation the matter was put before the Works Committee, - see Minute 6 of Works Committee conference of March 9th. In accordance with this, it was arranged for Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to put the matter before R.{Sir Henry Royce} at the first opportunity. We shall be glad to know if Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has been able to obtain any settlement on this matter. If not, the points for decision are:- (a) Whether we are to fit these on all further cars prior to delivery? (They are now being fitted to all "O" Series cars prior to delivery). we shall (b) Whether/consider the question of fitting these wearing plates retrospectively on cars already delivered, either on all cars or certain cars only? With regard to this, we are supplying our Depots and Agents with as many of these plates as the Works can supply to us, apart from those required for production, and have issued instructions to the Depots that these plates should be fitted in all cases of complaints.
