Oy5 - G 20421 April 20, 1921 To: Mr. Hives X4209 From: Mr. Olley Re: Wearing Plates on Rear Springs Replying to your letter of April 4th with regard to the wearing plates on rear springs, our reason for asking for the change from case hardened nickel steel to mild steel, case hardened, is that it is very difficult to obtain case hardened nickel steel sheet in the thickness required. The last lot we obtained we had to buy from Disstons, sawmakers in Philadelphia, at a prohibitive price. Since this plate does get worn after a time, due to the road grit that gets on it, it would be amply good enough to use mild steel and give it a good depth of case hardening with the outer surface dead hard. Perhaps you would give your further consideration to this matter and let us know what is decided as soon as possible. I appreciate that our explanation of the matter was not very full in our cable, and in future will attempt to give you the full reasons for any change which we request. Our impression was, however, that this matter had been under discussion in Derby and that the wearing plates had been originally instructed in mild steel but were changed to C.H.N.S. to suit the convenience of manufacture at that time.
