X4228 X4086 X4266 When running from Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence here, the filters on G-Goshawk-11 carburetter got made up on two occasions. In order to make certain, it was the filter, we removed the float before disturbing the filter - this showed the petrol supply was stopped down to a very small amount. The filter on both occasions did not look in such a state as one would anticipate to cause a stoppage - it had a fine covering of very fine silt. I think the explanation of this trouble may be that the dirt which is worrying us is so fine that it is held in suspension in the petrol in the tank, when this comes on to the filter in the tank it passes through that filter although it is the same mesh as the one on the carburetter. It passes because of the very high pressure that filter is subject to - at times with the engine running throttle shut, it may be 10 to 12 lbs. neg. pressure. When we get to the carburetter, there can only be 10" or 12" head on that filter. On G-Goshawk-11 I have filed three notches so that really, the filter on the carburetter, is not working. I believe the dirt seen on the carburetter filter which passes the filter in the rear tank, would pass through the jets. It might be possible to make tests to prove whether these assumptions are correct. MADE AT CROXLEY Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
