Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swd19/M.18.2.37.

Ph.III 3AZ170 H.R.Leonard.

The above car after being returned to the Works several times previously on account of poor oil consumption has again been returned.

By fitting new grummets on the inlet valves only the consumption figure has been raised from 400-1200 m.p.g.

Grummets, however, do not last any more than 500-1000 miles and the fitting of these can only be regarded as a temporary cure.

The repair are running a test for us without any inlet grummets at all before handing the heads over to us for our attention which will be in the morning of 19.2.37 (Friday)

Will you please carry out the following as arranged with you purely as a test case so that if successful we can inform the repair as to what to do on future cars which come in for this trouble.

(1) Measure the existing inlet valves and guides, likewise the exhaust valves and guides, the measurements to be recorded.

(2) Assemble with new inlet valves and guides, but ream to give a reduced and final clearance of .001 + 1/2 This to be verified by inspection and recorded.

Leave out the grummets on assembly of the inlets valves.

Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}
