Report No. 1831.

6. Running of engine.

Very good. Driver was not entirely satisfied because he said there was a slight tendency to miss at slow speeds when running light.
Hearing from him that a tester sent from "W" to de-carbonize the engine had not been able to completely get over this trouble, I suggested to him that is was probably due to the fact that the valve guides had become worn a little unevenly, and that the cure would be to have the guides reamered out and over-size valves fitted. I warned him, however, that this was likely to be rather expensive and that it might be questionable whether the advantage gained, was worth while from the point of view of the owner, who had to pay for it. I shall, however, have an opportunity of discussing this again. We squirted some paraffin on to the valve stems because one of them was squeaking.

7. Engine Gears.

Very good.

8. Impression of driver 's all-round capacity.

A thoroughly painstaking man with a good knowledge. Has a pleasant disposition.

9. Driver's experience.

Has been through "W" Instruction Class and was in charge of this car before the war. During the war he served in a Mechanical Transport column in France.

10. Impression of driver's capacity as a driver.

We did not go out with the car as Mrs. Bainbridge was away. I hope, however, to do so later.
As the driver spoke in a very matter-of-fact tone of charges down at 30 m.p.h., I do not think it likely that he experiences difficulty.

11. Springing.

Said to be very good.

12. Detonation.

Yes. Car has run 8,000 miles since the cylinders were de-carbonized last. This could be attended to by "W" when they have the car for axle quietening. They will doubtless at the
