Dear Alan,

Many thanks for your letter.

I got a letter from Withers (whose initials by the way are S.D. and this naturally has spoilt my D.S. Windle scheme) and I thought the best thing was to ring him up and ask him to lunch, because he suggested coming about 20,000 miles from the West End down here, and would not have had much time.

Needless to say, he was out but messages have been left and he may or may not turn up later, that is at the lunching bar, one Lockhart's by name.

I shall have your letter in my pocket so as to be able to surreptitiously to refer to things, but I rather think my best way of working matters is to say that you have recommended him as an honest man, and knowing nothing about cars or anything I put myself unreservedly in his hands, anything he says or does will be referred to you for judgment and I shall not take any steps in the matter without putting his prices before you.

If that does not put the fear of A.S.C. into him nothing else will. This being only one car he will not want to do anything to upset you, because you might buy more cars through him and also put more business in his way. Therefore, under the circumstances, I do not think he will sell me a pup.
