London, S.W.1.

Dear Sirs,

Further to the first paragraph of ours of the 20th inst. ref. EFC1/AD, this matter was duly discussed with Mr. McKinnon during his visit to us referred to in our letter EFC5/AD. of even date. The result of this discussion was that the Chloride Co. are not agreeable to modification of their cell lids on the same lines as you yourselves have now modified yours. They state that the required degree of flexibility necessary when burnt up cell to cell connections are used, will be provided by the fact that there is sufficient clearance for this purpose between the cell lid{A. J. Lidsey} and the sides of the compartment, so that the necessary flexibility is provided by the elasticity of the sealing compound. In the circumstances we do not propose to press the Chloride Co. to depart from the arrangement they consider most suitable, but to allow them to provide us experimentally with a 6-volt unit with two cell to cell connections of the burnt up type, and this unit to be for comparative purposes with a similar 6-volt unit we are asking our Order Office to obtain from yourselves. In each case these 6-volt units will incorporate the various other internal improvements which we have already realised on two experimental units received from you about three months ago.

It will be understood that the end terminals of these batteries will remain as at present so that there will be only two burnt up connections to be provided.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
