X3406 DF. From EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} Copy to EH. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}9/F81117. RE. ALTITUDE CONTROL ON "EAGLE" ENGINES FOR DeH.4 MACHINES. With reference to the order from the Director of Aeronautical Contracts for 20 sets of needles to be supplied and fitted to the twenty 8-Eagle engines at the Aircraft Manufacturing Company's Works, will you please instruct the Works to prepare the necessary material for these. The actual particulars and size of these we understand has already been settled by Mr. Hives. In the meantime, Mr. Hives has handed to us a complete set of these needles, which we have sent on to our tester at Hendon, asking him to fit, and at the same time giving him full instructions how these should be fitted, so that a demonstration can be made of the fixing of these, which we consider is a very important matter. We ought to put on record that the practice of altering these jets after delivery is not a satisfactory proceeding, as the efficiency of the engine, both as regards power and petrol consumption, is entirely dependent on this correct setting, which we are afraid can only be done satisfactorily on an engine on the test bed. We consider that the question of correct range of control should be definitely settled and arranged before the engines leave the Works, and not after, as otherwise the whole question of records of the tests and results obtained on these engines before leaving the Works are of no value. | ||
