For the attention of Mr. Grylls.

Dear Sirs,

We are very much obliged for your letter of the 16th inst., and have pleasure in enclosing a sketch showing the way in which the gear was mounted to obtain the figures shown on the curve which we sent you with our last letter.

The pull on the steering wheel was registered by a spring balance, and weights were added to a lever representing the drop arm which was mounted in a horizontal position and was free to oscillate, being restrained only by the spring balance attached to the steering wheel. The application of a load permitted it to oscillate slightly but it would come to rest, giving a reading on the spring balance. The loads were therefore not in this sense shock loads. Our experience with shock loads being that they are absorbed in the gear to a very great extent, and are not transmitted to the steering wheel.

We are pleased to hear that you have had very good results from the Weller gear, as that is a type that was developed from our own.
