R2/M28.7.22. 554 X3548 With reference to carburation the suggestion on LeC.1350 has been supplanted by a scheme similar to that we have sent you for Goshawk 1, as we came to the same conclusions that you have arrived at experimentally, but we are not sure that we can arrange a satisfactory Goshawk 1. (known as the Condor scheme) when the exhaust pipes and inlet pipes are at the same side. Mr. Elliott will send you further schemes of what we are thinking of trying on the export chassis. Regarding Goshawk II. carburation I am extremely pleased you find this so satisfactory. It seems to be the best and also the simplest thing that we have done so far, and apparently will serve as a very good standard to compare other schemes with. You will see on the descriptive memo. sent to Mr.Johnson that the engine for the export chassis had been arranged in the same way that you now recommend and which you think will result in the greatest safety from fire. We are not quite clear of troubles as the most natural arrangement would be to have the carburetter close up to the pipe where it divides into two, but we fear this would not give satisfaction and that the better arrangement would be as shown in the enclosed sketch. This latter would give a certain amount of uptake before dividing into two, the throttle valve and uptake being exhaust jacketed. FIG I FIG II R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
