RE GOSHAWK RUN TO DEAL. X4219 SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 27th & 28th MAY. DISTANCE - 270 MILES. RUNNING TIME - 10 HOURS MOSTLY RATHER SLOW CROSS ROADS & 20 TOWNS, THERE & BACK. CONSUMPTION - 11 GALLONS. OBSERVATIONS. (1) Occasional firing in the carburetter, thought to be ignition from dirty plugs - not so. Real reason burning oil on exhaust valve stems causing sticking valves. (2) One poor compression - probably exhaust valve leaking. (3) Care must be taken with this car compared with the 40/50, not to hang on the top gear or the second gear does not come up to expectations, otherwise quite good on hills. (4) Care should be taken that the clutch has sufficient freedom to stop if the engine is running fast. Somewhat doubtful in No.4 Goshawk. Also clutch if heated does not hold well - needs confirming. (5) Carburetter leaking on stopping the engine. (6) On returning to WW. investigation made to find the cause of a loss of compression on one cylinder shewed that to remove the cover over the valves a dashboard connector is required for a low tension wire, (or some other change.) (7) The distributor cover required to fit more freely. (8) The tappets were found to be set too fine and required scraping - clearance increased to 4/1000 but no improvement (1) | ||
