To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} XHD Borg & Beck Clutches. Further to our conversation of a few days ago regarding the engine timing markings on Borg & Beck clutches, we wrote to the makers asking for their recommendations for the best way of making the markings and for protecting the exposed surface of the clutch afterwards. We also suggested that they should stamp the markings before giving the covers the anti-rust treatment. We give herewith their reply to these points. "In regard to the concluding paragraph of your letter wherein you suggest that we arrange for the engine timing marks to be engraved or etched on the clutch cover, we feel that it would be to our mutual advantage for you to carry out this particular operation. As you are aware, our pressed steel clutch covers are treated with an anti-rust process during manufacture, and our suggestion is, therefore, that you arrange for the engine timing marks to be scratched on the cover by a suitable scriber, and after this operation that the scratched marks be covered with a thin coat of gold size or clear cellulose varnish. By carrying out the above procedure, we suggest it would not be necessary for the local cleaning up process, which you have adopted prior to marking the cover for engine timing".
