RE "GOSHAWK PT" - REAR AXLE TUBE, BRAKE, AND HUB. N. SCHEME.
EPC. X.4257

Kindly note the following points which Mr. Royce would like altered in connection with the above scheme:-

(1) The brake drum should have a strengthening flange on the inside edge formed from the sheet material and .7" deep measuring from the braking surface radially to the outer edge of the flange. The protection cover should be brought out right over this feature, which will increase its overall diameter by roughly an inch. This sheet-metal cover should be brought well over the brake drum flange so that it will be about .6" deep from its inner surface to the out-looking edge.

(2) The lock for the nut on the axle tube, holding on the brake mechanism should be cancelled, as Mr. Royce thinks it is unnecessary.

(3) The oil baffling and draining features on the brake anchorage and brake drum should be made larger and more robust, and the knife edge features on the annular piece bolted to the brake anchorage should be replaced by square edges. The sheet metal annulus rivetted to the brake drum should be made of 14 gauge material, and about twice as large as shown. The inner flange of the brake anchorage oil guard should be made about .150 deeper, and this piece should be an aluminium die casting of practical thickness, Mr. Royce thinks.

(4) No feature should be provided on the brake drum for preventing the heads from turning of the bolts securing the drum to the wheel hub, as Mr. Royce thinks it would necessitate using thick material for the brake drum pressing. The nuts on the brake drum bolts should be locked by riveting, and not by means of tab washers.
