E.L. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}5/RW/25.8.26. Re: Heating in the back part of closed 'New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I' Cars. Referring to the attached papers, this matter, in accordance with your request, was discussed at the Sales Conference yesterday and with a view to preventing more Cars coming out without some special means being adopted to overcome this complaint, it was agreed to immediately instruct the Coachbuilders to adopt the suggestion marked X. in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AJL/1/T9.8.26. attached. It was, however, felt that this should only be regarded as a temporary expedient and that what P.N. said at paragraph marked A.{Mr Adams} in his PN{Mr Northey}2/DN23.8.26. is right - i.e. that the Works should provide whatever form of insulation is necessary. The great point that we have to bear in mind in this connection, is, that whilst we can watch a matter of this description on complete Cars which we ourselves turn out, or which are turned out by the Coachbuilders with whom we usually deal, we cannot see that it is carried out in the case of complete Cars which are built on Chassis supplied by us as Chassis, either at Home or Abroad - and this after all, constitutes the majority of the business. Another point is, that whatever we instruct the Coachbuilders to do in this direction, will doubtless cost us extra. Having decided, therefore, how to deal with this matter temporarily, we await to hear what the Works propose to do in the future as a permanent cure and how soon it will commence. Sg.{Arthur F.
