HEATING OF CARS.

FROM P.N.

There appears to be a variety of means adopted by different coachbuilders with a view to preventing the heat from the exhaust pipe getting into the interior of the coachwork.

Very much of the impression of attractiveness and success to be derived from Rolls-Royce Phantoms, especially in warm weather, depends upon the degree of success with which the heat is prevented from entering. Do you not think that the time has arrived when the Works should be definitely instructed to provide some form of insulation so that the heat from the exhaust pipe and swan-neck cannot get to the body, even if the coach-builders happen to be employing a method of insulation which is not entirely effective.

Although it may not be our job primarily to see that inflammable material is not placed by the coach-builder too near an obviously hot pipe, at the same time it its Rolls-Royce reputation which is likely to suffer most.

A very effective system of covering by means of asbestos in a suitable form, or perhaps in addition metal guards, should, I think, be very carefully considered by Derby with a view to something standard being supplied with the chassis.
