To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EFC. c. SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. EY. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} ORIGINAL EFC5/T29.4.29. ALKALINE BATTERIES. x3717 We have done nothing with alkaline batteries since June 1924 at which time the Alklum and Ni-Fe batteries which we had tested were returned to the makers. A report of the results of these tests and the position generally was made. (EFC1/T15.5.24). We are now again approached by Batteries Ltd., Redditch, who now include amongst the directors, Mr:G.R.N. Minchin, Mr. Oliver Lucas and Mr. Peter Bennett. The technical position appears to be as follows :- Quite a number of improvements have been made to get more suitable vents and cases (Dagenite) to overcome external corrosion. Also some considerable improvement in the internal resistance of these cells has been effected by embodying corrugated nickel strips in the active material. It appears that the combined weight of two similar 6-volt units of suitable capacity is now just on the limit of the weight given in our specification for two 6-volt units acid batteries. The size, however, of 6-volt units of comparative capacity with the acid batteries is somewhat bigger in every dimension, and the probability is that the internal resistance on high rate discharge is still not quite as low as we like. In the event of it being considered expedient now to examine these batteries further, there would appear to be two possible (or perhaps not very possible) cases :- Contd. | ||
