Experimental Department 27th February 1937. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/AP. W.A.Robotham Esq., Book Cadillac Hotel, Detroit, MICHIGAN U.S.A. Dear Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}, Glad to see from your wire that you had a good crossing and the "Queen Mary" did not break down on the way. Enclosed is the only obviously personal letter which has arrived for you so far. Since you left we have only managed to rake up one more query. Hardy would like to know how the Americans produce the splines on their steering gear rocker shafts and inside the large end of the pendulum lever. R.R. mill each spline on the shaft individually and cut each spline in the lever on a slotting machine. The only good piece of news we have for you is that chunking has been considerably reduced by throwing away the stay from the gearbox to the cross and using instead a stay from the gearbox to the engine. Perhaps the American Papers have told you that the Grinders are on strike and that most of the rest of the Works have been sent away. Yours sincerely, | ||
