Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 829241 CHASSIS. MINUTES OF CONFERENCE AT DERBY TO DISCUSS IMPROVEMENTS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE NEXT MATERIAL SANCTIONS - APRIL 18th 1934. PRESENT:- Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} Cgh.{W Clough} Minute No.1. MATERIAL TO BE ORDERED. 40/50 H.P. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} said that one of the questions to be settled was whether 50 sets or 100 sets should be ordered. IMPROVEMENTS. Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} replied that it depended on what improvements were going to be included in the next series. He pointed out that the batch of chassis in question would have to be sold over a period extending over the next two years, and in view of Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' recent notes on the question it rather appeared as though not sufficient improvements would be included to make the chassis sufficiently up-to-date so as to make them suitable for covering the period of two years. Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} said that the modifications required were those which would improve the silence and smoothness of running; performance at the moment is of rather secondary consideration. Minute No.2. Improved Engine Mounting. Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} mentioned that the new 40/50 H.P. car which he has just taken over for his use was disappointing from a silence and vibration point of view and he made particular reference to 'tappet clatter'. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} pointed out that one of the most likely methods of tackling the question of vibrations as felt by the passenger would be by improving the engine mounting but as alteration in the engine mounting is so likely to affect the behaviour of the front end of the car on the road, and we have no scheme ready which can be adopted, very thorough investigation and practical tests will have to be carried out before an improved engine mounting can be safely recommended. Minute No.3. Cam Balancer. Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} requested that the Cam Balancer should be incorporated in the next batch of material in order to give quieter idling of the engine. Minute No.4. Roller Tappets. Cx.{Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} referred to the question of roller tappets and enquired whether the adoption of these would give quieter running. | ||
