X 2894 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from EFC. c. CJ & FN. c. Ry & Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. Rg{Mr Rowledge} & EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} c. R.R. of America Inc. EFCS/T16.8.21. X. 2894 - TUNGSTEN CONTACT POINTS. X 3129. Herewith please receive copy of my assistant's report on further tests of tungsten contact points. The experiment of running the tungsten points with the battery positive lead connected direct to the earthed terminal of the condenser instead of making use of the return earth from the casing, was done with the object of trying out if there was anything in the current having to traverse the casing through possibly faulty contacts. The fact that no improvement on the tungsten points has been appreciated merely shows that this is not the reason of failure of tungsten points. It does not show, however, that faulty contacts at this point may not exist on the chassis. (They were not likely to exist on our bench apparatus). Mr. Royce will also note that our trial of tungsten points with the scrubbing action has shown no improvement. It is now suggested to run tungsten points with a larger capacity, and for this purpose we shall be shortly running a set with two condensers in parallel. We shall also be making bench experiments of the standard ignition with capacities of ½, 1½ and 2 times normal. Cont. | ||
