1260. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Sft{Mr Swift}/EW/WP. 20.2.39. PATTERN - CONVENTIONAL LINE 8 ENGINE. With reference to your memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/R.17.2.39 re the above costs. It should be noted that our memo Sft{Mr Swift}/EW1/BH.21.11.38 was for the Crankcase, High Power Head unit. The figures given, approximately £480, included 1st class mahogany Pattern with a complete set of Core-boxes, metal parts where necessary, capable of producing 1,000 castings or more as stated. Referring to Sft{Mr Swift}/EW/WP.14.2.39, we gave 1,550 hours, this being for the Conventional type Crankcase unit, which is an entirely different pattern problem than the High Power type. The High Power type being designed to incorporate the Exhaust system intact, which means extra work owing to more core-boxes and method of moulding. The Conventional type, less the Exhaust system is much easier, as in this case we do not produce so many core-boxes owing to simpler method of moulding and core-making. We should also like to make clear that our cheaper type of pattern will be constructed in such a way that wearing parts can be metallised later when you have received your Experimental castings, and decided which type to instruct for production. This would eventually bring cost to our approximate figure of £480, but for the Exp. budget you should use Sft{Mr Swift}/EW/WP.14.2.39, giving 1,550 hours. Sft{Mr Swift}/EW. | ||
