Your CJ1/E12/5/24.

We agree generally with R's praise of the Adopted Scheme; all are satisfied that it is very good, but greater experience might lead to modifications, in the sense only that we are always trying to improve anything on our chassis.

The scheme will require 10,000 miles test. We are hoping to have three chassis ready for Mr. Hives to take to France by the end of this month, and we think that Experimental Dept. should be through 10,000 miles tests on this chassis in about six or seven weeks from the present date.

Of the material which has been ordered in anticipation, so far as production is concerned, the amount we have scrapped may amount to £4,000, as a high figure. Nothing, or very little, of the material that we have ordered since you were last at Derby, when you gave us permission to risk up to £20,000, will be scrapped.

Fortunately, with the Adopted Scheme, there are quite a few of these parts already being standardised, that is to say, a standardisation sheet is going round at the present time, such as the Engine modifications, Front Springs, Front Shackles etc. and we feel there are a great number of other parts that will not be altered.

We are therefore unanimous in recommending that we take the risk and fit "U" series chassis with the Adopted Scheme, and order no further old material for "U" series. Chassis made in "U" series will have to be delivered from Works to Test in eleven weeks from now, and it should be realised by you and everybody that we are taking the risk of fitting the Adopted Scheme on this series and not ordering any further old material, and that if any serious modifications take place after or during the 10,000 miles test, there might be a hold-up in delivery of chassis. We are, however, of the opinion that we ought to take this risk in the hopes that the 10,000 miles test will be pushed forward with sufficiently great speed to allow us time to minimise any delay in delivery of chassis.

Therefore generally you will see that we advise taking a risk and going ahead full speed both with production of this material and getting the 10,000 miles tests through on three chassis at the earliest moment, in the hopes that if any alterations are found necessary there will be a minimum amount of delay.
