PHANTOM III BRAKES

I am sending you herewith a number of rivet heads taken out of the rear brake drums of 3-AZ-36 - Hoopers Trials Car.

This is the second car which N. have dealt with on which they have found the same thing, and I understand samples were returned to Works by GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}

Mr Slater Booth was driving the car home one evening when he had occasion to use the brakes severely owing to traffic conditions. He found after doing this, there was no movement on the brake pedal.

The car was taken to N for the brakes to be examined, and these rivet heads were then found lying in the brake drum.

In the early days of PIII on production test we had one or two similar cases, and samples of the broken rivets were handed to Mr Martindale by MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}

As you know commencing on Chassis No. 3-BU-96 the rivetting of the brake liners was changed to flat headed rivets sunk into the liner. This means approximately 250 chassis are fitted with the flush type of rivet.

Will you please say if you consider any action should be taken in this matter.
