Wider Rear Brakes with Aluminium Drums & Shoes. Senior Range.

we attach to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH's copy, PL.536, the original of which shows the wider rear brakes, with aluminium drums and shoes, for Senior Range high performance cars.

The brake shoes are 3.5" wide instead of the 2.25" of the standard brakes; this was the maximum widening that could be obtained by keeping the carrier plate in the same position, extending the drums as far as possible into the wheels and a corresponding amount in the other direction. On both wide and narrow track cars, there is then over .5" clearance between the drum and the body brackets with the rear axle in the roll position used to determine wheel arch clearances.

Aluminium shoes are drawn, since they will follow up the drum expansion better than steel shoes, and in addition are lighter than steel shoes.

No shoe rests are required with aluminium shoes as the bearing provided at the adjuster end is long enough to give adequate control.
