Re. ENGINE VALVES. - EXCESSIVE PLAY IN VALVE GUIDES ON NEW CARS.

We attach hereto copy of memo we have received from Paris Depot re the above, on which we should like to have your comments.

In the meantime, we have asked Paris to let us have the approximate mileage of the car in question.

You will see that we are asked by Paris who is to pay for the fitting of the oversize valves. We cannot very well charge this to R.D.W., and at the moment cannot quite see that it can be debited to R.D.D. or A.T.D. Do you think we should inform Paris to charge the item to Works policy, pending the matter receiving further investigation.

As you are no doubt aware, the fitting of oversize valves is a practice which is frequently adopted by the Repair Department to obtain good slow running.

Is it considered that the high lift camshaft and the reduction in length of the valve guide on the post-war car will lead to more wear?
