X2762 BM- c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to B. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}2/H12.1.23. re. MAGNETO DRIVE. Springfield are now adopting a fabric coupling type of drive for the 40/50 cars now being produced at Springfield, which they claim is silent and much more satisfactory that the latest type drive which we are now using as standard. No magneto brake is required. I attach print of Drawing No. 2303 showing the arrangement of this scheme, which, as far as its behaviour on new cars is concerned, appears to be quite satisfactory. I do not know what experience they will have when this has been in use in customers' hands for some considerable time. They claim that the drive has been running for 10,000 miles without giving any trouble, and Cy. has promised to submit this to R.{Sir Henry Royce} and CJ. for their approval, as per latest instructions.
