X110D Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Smth.3/JH. 26th August, 1936. Messrs. Borg & Beck Ltd., Tachbrook Road, Leamington Spa. Dear Sirs, Re:Phantom III Clutch. Further to our letter of the 21st instant, and our telephone conversation with Mr. Shimkins, we have decided to discontinue the use of the present Phantom III driven plate and to adopt one of our own manufacture. This latter plate is the best we know of at the moment. It is more consistently good from the point of view of jaggers, and is much stronger centrifugally than the Borg & Beck disc. We have tried the experimental Borg & Beck disc with extra rivets, but find that it jaggers badly, due presumably to the loss of flexibility. Meanwhile we are inclined to regard the Long type of plate as the ultimate solution for a clutch of this size, and are making ourselves an experimental plate based on the design of the 12" Long plate which we have here. If this is successful it is possible that we should want to produce it ourselves under licence from your goodselves, if you would be agreeable to this procedure. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
