re. AMERICAN ALTERATIONS. No. 29 & 30.

With reference to BJ's memo BJ/Py11/D28.3.24, I have replied to this on our behalf in my EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}12/Hl.4.24 copy of which has been sent to you.

I attach to your copy of this memo copy of Proposal Sheet from Springfield regarding Standardisation Sheet No.29, Charge Gear Box, reference Oy-2-E-22523, attaching Prints Nos. A.2674. Also copy of Springfield's Proposal Sheet with regard to Sheet No. 30, Ground Continuous Gears, reference Oyl-E.22524, with Prints A2850. A2848, A2849, A2851. A5048. A5049.

The Standardisation Sheets for the above have now been signed by R.{Sir Henry Royce} and I take it in view of our approval will now be signed by CJ and returned to Springfield.

The following, however, are points for your consideration:-

Standardisation Sheet No.29.

We certainly have in the past had considerable trouble with vibrations when using the reverse. This disagreeable trouble has certainly been eliminated somewhat since using ground gears. Is it proposed to use ground gear for the reverse when adopting the Lees Bradner scheme of grinding?
Apart from this however, I feel that the strengthening of the gear box from this point alone should give improvement, so long as no serious harm can be done by this addition.
Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} is of the opinion that this improvement should be embodied immediately, or at least the 10,000 mile test with the addition should be made with a view to its adoption as standard on Derby chassis, as in his tests on the retard drive on rear axles, he was able to find the weakest part of the reverse gear drive was the bottom part of the gear box, which on two occasions burst.

Standardisation Sheet No. 30.

Although we have approved of the above as we see no objection to ground gears, it should be appreciated that we have not been able to obtain "100% acceptable" side shaft gears by having ground gears.
