January 13th. 1917. RE STANDING ORDER NO. 35 - ALTERATION TO BRAKE DRUMS, ALSO ALTERATION TO AXLE TUBES. (RY3/C11117) Regarding the alteration to the axle tubes, we shall want to know how much better these are than the present ones, so as to justify the change. We understand that Mr. Haldenby has this matter in hand. One cannot imagine any better scheme of testing than to find the relative resistance to bending, such as would naturally occur if a car were side slipping against the curb, or dashing into a bank by the side of the road and being stopped by the rim of the wheel. This would give an idea of how far the weight should be over-hung in the revolving test, which would appear to be roughly from 15" to 18".
