COPY. S/W (Bn.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington}) C13/H20.9.19. Re Wooden Wheels. ------------ As you know, we have been doing all we possibly can to stop people ordering wooden wheels. After a good deal of difficulty we have persuaded any amount of customers to stick to the wire wheels, but we are afraid that we shall not succeed in all cases. So far, I think we are right in saying that with the exception of a few cases, we have succeeded in persuading the English customers to have wire wheels in those cases where they have asked for wooden; but in spite of all our arguments against the wooden wheels and our strong recommendation of the wire to America, we are unable to persuade them to have the wire in all cases. I attach copy of letter we have received from Mr. Schuette on this question, and may mention that this has been accompanied by three or four instructions to fit wooden wheels, with the remark that the customers will accept none other. It does seem to me, therefore, that you will have to consider this question of wooden wheels and the obtaining of suitable wooden wheels. I shall be glad to receive your remarks upon this important matter. We may mention that in all cases the wooden wheels would be accompanied by Warland rims, or, in the case of American wheels, some other type of demountable rim. C. Encl. | ||
