PHANTOM III. HAND BRAKE LEVER.

We have received a complaint that these levers exhibit slack on their keys and result in lost movement of the brake shoes.

On taking a brake lever assembly and dismantling it, we find the keys to be a very good fit in both levers and in the shaft. We then endeavoured by main force to move the hand lever relative to the short brake lever, but were unable to effect any movement whatever.

It will be necessary to take retrospective on all chassis in Fitting Shop and Test. Any assemblies which show the least movement must be re-fitted.

Will Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} please check up on this and return any levers which are not 100%.

During investigation some shafts were shown to us which had been badly milled in the slots and this may have been responsible for some of our trouble. But at the same time this does not exonerate the fitter for fitting up incorrect details.

Owing to the heavy load on the keys the fitting must be very carefully done, particularly the fit of the keys in the shaft.

In connection with the milling of these slots, the new Carl Hurth machine appears to be ideal, and the job should be transferred to the machine as soon as possible.
