contd :> -2- avoid wastage during replenishment of the tanks. Any unavoidable or accidental waste should be recorded on the consumption sheets so that allowance can be made. Care must be taken that no water or foreign matter enters the tanks. The duration of the various stages have been slightly modified and stage No.10 deleted. A revised chart is appended to this instruction. We supply a consumption curve plotted against the H.P. which results in a total consumption of 1140 galls. for the 72 1/2 hrs. These figures were obtained from a test and it is desired not to exceed the consumptions shown during the throttled stages. If it is found necessary to richen up during any stage and exceed the consumptions shown, we should endeavour to balance it out by greater economy during another stage. It is not anticipated there will be any difficulty in keeping within the consumptions given as some of the actual points during this test came appreciably below the line. If at any part of the test the running on the weak mixtures becomes unstable resulting in 'popping', or 'hunting', it would be advisable to richen up temporarily to restore stable state after which it would probably be possible to return to a more economical mixture. It is sometimes found after running on weak mixtures the sparking plugs become fatigued but can be restored to normal again by running for a short time on a richer mixture. During the full throttle run we should not press too much for very low consumption. As the duration is only one hour it is not policy to save only a few pints. | ||
