NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE 2a, ELDON PLACE, BARRAS BRIDGE. 11th April, 1938 YOUR REF. OUR REF. WES/PW. A.F. Martindale Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited, Derby. File 1170 Dear Mr. Martindale, You will recollect that I interviewed you subsequent to your letter of the 22nd March with regard to apparent exudation from brake linings. We discussed this matter and agreed that we here would be in a much more favourable position if any linings which are the subject of such a complaint could be returned to us for thorough examination. I understood at the time that while most of the material in question has been thrown away as scrap, you thought it might be possible to secure some linings from which this feature was suspected and that you would return these to us. I hope you will be able to carry out this procedure, as it appears to us to be the only way in which we can assist in eliminating the cause. The second complaint with regard to servo motor facings we can best investigate as soon as we have completed the Bentley axle rig, as it certainly indicates that the lining µ speed curve is a factor here. In connection with this rig and the time device to be used on the strip, I think we shall be able to secure the finer timing which you considered desirable. We now have a supply here of AC. 50 cycle time controlled current, and I think we are well on the way to making an instrument which will be useful as a permanent measurement of time periods in all our testing. With regard to the brake drums which you have loaned to us, one, as near as we could measure, was dead true but the other was approximately .004" out. The mandrel was returned marked for your attention, and I trust you received it safely. Yours faithfully, FERODO LIMITED. N.E. Shilton Technical Department. | ||
