Handwritten note: Treatment to insides with copal varnish to prevent corrosion due to water glass

X 3484 RE CARBURETTERS.

Mr Platford is complaining of corrosion, which Mr Hall our chemist, puts down to the use of sodium silicate, or water glass, in eliminating porosity.

Mr Hall suggested using boiled oil, but it was in view of the fact that this scheme allowed little pellets of oil to come adrift later, that we resorted to water glass.

I consider, however, that we could treat the carburetter as at present with water glass, but before putting them into service, they might be varnished or sprayed inside with a coating of copal varnish.

Would you kindly try a set of carburetters with this treatment to find out whether the copal varnish will peel away when constantly imersed in petrol, if so, of course the scheme is useless.
