contd :- -3- from the caps or joints, and before despatch should be carefully cleaned down, the plug removed, and the oil level made up, if necessary, to the correct level. If there are any signs of the glands leaking at the end of the road test, these should be dismantled. If the shock damper is functioning sayisfactorily and there are no serious leaks, so that the gland does not require attention, the filling plug on the damper should be removed and oil added until it overflows. It is recommended that before this plug is removed, the case should be carefully cleaned and the oil added should be filtered, as the presence of any foreign matter in the shock damper will seriously impair its working. Attached is a specification of the oil used for filling the damper. If this is not avilable, an oil with similar qualities should be obtained - either Mobiloil 'E', or Prices 'Zero' should be used. The loads which should be given by the dampers should be 80 lbs. dwon and 40 lbs. up on the front - 60 lbs. up and 80 lbs. down on the rear. These loads should not vary by more than ± 5 lbs. As hydraulic dampers give a considerably greater load than the friction dampers, the ball joints should be given careful attention as regards lubrication and adjustment.
