RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}4/BH. 23rd May, 1939. Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Experimental Dept., DERBY. [Handwritten note: File] Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. C.T. Salt. We thank you for your letter of the 20th instant. We are proceeding with the production of detail drawings of the Piston Rings as we make them for Pistons EB.4740, and will let you have these in the course of a few posts. With regard to the Pistons themselves, taking first the point raised that the inside core diameter is slightly oversize, you will remember that we are commencing this job from existing sand core foundry equipment, whilst the die for which we quoted is being manufactured. The draw on this corebox has been increased slightly so that when we change over the Pistons from the steel die, we shall not be confronted with the problem of a difference in weight. This of course does affect the open end of the Piston, but we think you will find that the top end where the loads are greatest has not been affected. There is an ample margin of safety on the skirt as supplied so that no great risk is involved on this point. Our Inspection department passed the small blow hole in the gudgeon pin boss. You will notice there is quite a round clean hole and is not of the kind which may give rise to a creeping crack. [Logo: NATIONAL SCHEME FOR DISABLED MEN] | ||
