Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/Mor32/J29115. Re. Leaky Radiators. BJ. 29.1.15. In reply to your letter BJ13/IW28115, we wish to first of all point out that, of course, Mr. Salamanca is quite wrong in his assumption that although realising a defect in our radiators, we were not making any endeavour to rectify its faults. As a matter of fact Mr. Royce, Drawing Office and Experimental Dept. were many months busily working on this problem, and the whole position has been brought to a very satisfactory conclusion. The first improvement that we made was to use a suspension which had the effect of distributing the load on a larger area of the matrix. The old standard radiator when tested by the pumping rig commenced to leak after 2 1/2 hours, and at the end of 8 hours 10 minutes there were no less that six leaks in evidence. The [handwritten: new] suspension increased the time to 11 hours 35 minutes before the first leak, showing 4 1/2 times increase in the length of life. | ||
