SS.{S. Smith} FRONT AXLE CONTROL DAMPER.

Herewith we send N. sch. 2814, shewing the proposed improved lubrication for the ball end. Our information up to the present is that this scheme has worked well on existing axle control dampers, and it appears that it would do so since all the oil from the drip plug escapes through the ball end only. It appears to be better than the gland scheme suggested at one time which would have a point of leakage if the gland were not tightened up properly.

The failure of the present scheme would seem to be very largely due to the small pipe up the triangle, and no doubt an improvement could be effected by increasing the size of this pipe to say .250 outside. We still think however that the lubrication from the damper shaft is to be preferred if only for the reason that this is in the central system. It is suggested that the pipe up the triangle should be retained so that oil overflowing from the ball end runs down and lubricates the front bearing of the triangle instead of being wasted. It may be that enough will get down that way to lubricate both ends, but we do not propose to depend on this.

We notice in HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/LG25129. that reference is made in item 3. to improve lubrication of the bottom bearing of the triangle. but in the 10,000 mile trial report on lubrication attached to HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG22129. it is said that there was ample lubrication to these bearings. We presume therefore that the information in RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}'s note is an oversight, and are not proposing to do anything with it at the moment.

We think it will be definitely impossible to lift the cover off the shock damper in place, and we suggest that it will not be necessary to do so.
