re. PHANTOM II. 34-GN. FAIREY.

With reference to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWHl/MJ.10.4.30, also Lp{Mr Lappin}20/Av/JL.10.4.30. and Lp{Mr Lappin}19/Av/JL.10.4.30., we are glad to hear that Mr. Fairey is pleased with this car. Our special effort in dealing with the car however, was as far as possible to make it suitable for good high speed performance, including springing, holding the road and steering. To obtain the best advantage in this respect we had to make final adjustments to the shock absorbers which are now non-standard. The high pressure valves on both front and rear shock absorbers having at least 100 to 110 lbs. loading.

We are doubtful if the best adjustment has been obtained to the front shock absorber setting, but we certainly do consider that the increased loading of the high pressure valve on the rear shock absorbers should be considered a standard setting.

With regard to the complaints raised by Mr. Fairey these are certainly interesting, and we suggest require attention as follows:-

(1) Fan Fouling Radiator Shutter Control lever.
This we have previously complaint of, and although some increased clearance was obtained, this is still insufficient. It is possible on the present standard car, under conditions of fully open shutters and slack fan belt, for there to be insufficient clearance. The suggestion is that the range of adjustment of the fan belt should be lowered, so that with the maximum stretch possible the fan is still definitely clear of the shutter control.
Will BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please give this matter attention.
Can a special bracket be supplied which can be fitted to the above car?

(2) Oil Pressure Drop. This is rather serious and a new feature, and one which we consider requires Experimental Dept. attention so far as they are able to introduce the trouble on their experimental car, so that a definite cause and cure can be ascertained, and not only applied to Mr. Fairey's car, but to make sure that we are not sending out cars which may give similar trouble.
On chassis on test we have not been able to reproduce this trouble, but understand that the Repair
