Re: Chassis No.GTR-2 - T.C.Johnson Esq. Wisbech.

--------------------------------

Correspondence in S. file will show that towards the end of last month arrangements were made for the above mentioned car to be brought to W. because the Owner had complained of a vibration and noise in the transmission.

When the car arrived at W. the Owner's complaint was investigated and was found to be substantiated. The noise was the boom which it is so difficult to eliminate entirely.

The standard methods for effecting improvement of this trouble were carried out, and although the noise was not entirely eliminated considerable improvement was effected.

Having exhausted the standard methods on the job the Owner was informed that the car was ready for delivery, and it was collected from us on the 13th inst.

We regret to say we have had a telephone message this morning from Mr. Johnson's Representative informing us that both Mr. Johnson and the Chauffeur have observed the noise again, and further, that the Owner was returning the car to us today for further attention.

This particular trouble has been discussed with the Experimental Department, and that Department can only advise us to try a non-standard friction damper behind the gearbox on this chassis in a further effort to overcome the transmission noise completely.

This case is very much on the lines of the trouble we had with Mr. Hopps car, Chassis No.GLR-50.

The suggested remedy means a non-standard job which would require special sanction before we could carry it out, and we shall therefore be pleased to know if you will be prepared to sanction this alteration.

Special material would have to be prepared, and it might be necessary, therefore, to ask Mr. Johnson to continue to use his car for a little while until the material could be got ready for the job.
