Since we have found that the dynamically balanced propeller shaft will run quietly up to any speed approaching the proper master whirling speed we do not see any reason for the extension we lately fitted to the Peregrine gearbox. Personally I never liked this fitting, and I am certain that it would not be right to use a Skefco bearing to resist the forces to overcome the friction of the sliding joint, which we believed contributed largely to the failure of the spiral bevel pinion thrust bearing. If however we cannot do without some shortening of the propeller shaft I propose we try over a design in which the sliding joint is carried direct on the 3rd. motion shaft of the gearbox and the universal joint, directly on the outside of the tubular extension in which this sliding joint is fitted. We should then by making the propeller shaft slightly shorter, and taking away quite an item of the weight between the universal joints. The sliding part might have much shorter serrations possibly of larger radius, and its stability improved by a circular bearing inside the 3rd. motion shaft. This move would mean that we might make this joint more oil retaining, and more easy to lubricate. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
