X.3530A/B. RE EXPERIMENTAL 40/50 H.P. MAGNETO DRIVE - N.SCHEME 52.

RECEIVED 2 JUN 1919

In reply to your memo to Mr. Royce concerning the above, would you kindly note that on any magneto drive to be tried no brake should be used. for the fabric couplings, Mr. Royce wishes to use therefore, the scheme known as figure 4. if the exhaust pipe, that is to say, the downtake from the exhaust box, proves too hot for these fabric couplings, it should be covered with an asbestos and metal guard. The coupling in the tube should be formed with an inside spigot, as in sketch below -

[SKETCH OF A COUPLING]

and the two halves of the coupling tube should be made of different diameters, so as to accommodate the different dimensions of the head of the bolt and the nut. The diameter of the boss on the coupling, which is bolted to the magneto, seems excessive, and should be considerably reduced. The bolts which actually clamp the fabric coupling, do not appear to be in the centre of the rear of the clamping plates, and might perhaps with advantage, be altered a little in position, that is to say, if the position you shew is not a standard one fixed by the Hardy Company.

Mr. Royce thinks that Derby wish to try the (Contd.)
