HPC/RH.{R. Hollingworth}1/VS.{J. Vickers}21.5.37.

Side Steering Tube LOP.FB.240. N.S.4800.

This had apparently been damaged in the first accident, causing the tube to bear on the neck of the front ball pin, which was deeply chafed. The rear end of the tube was damaged also, the slot for the ball pin being "bulged out".

The front ball pads were pitted and scored, but the rear pads and both balls were in good condition.

Lubrication was adequate.

Front Axle LOP.GB.1235. including brakes to LOP.GB.1236.
Despatched 21.1.37 - mileage 12,900.

The axle beam had been bent by the recent crash.

The Millenite Liners, GB.2395, were grooved but not badly worn, and the Ferodo S.66/11 linings on the O.S. were in good condition. Those on the N.S., however, were damaged by contact with the liner lockplates. The drum had apparently been banged on too far while on test and had not been drawn back to the retaining nut after the latter had been pinned up. This theory is supported by the fact that the drum had been rubbing heavily on the end of the cross steering tube.

The anti-judder mechanism was very badly worn and also the rake adjusters and linkages. The oilite bushes are not satisfactory and in view of the large amount of wear, we send herewith Ex.1.166, giving detailed measurement of the various parts. It should be mentioned that, though the adjusting cams are burred, they worked quite freely and were protected adequately by the mud excluders. Also the adjusting rods GB.1100 were both sheared off at the base of the 3.BA locknut by rough usage, and had been like this for some time.

Cross Steering Tube LOP.GB.1588. - Mileage 12,900.

Slightly bent (.150") as a result of the recent accident, but in satisfactory condition otherwise.

Exhaust Fittings LOP.HB.{C. E. Harcombe}2828.

The connecting pipe to the rear silencer had cracked half-way round as shown in Ex.1.152. The system was otherwise in good condition.

continued.
