40/50 HP. Chassis. Main Silencer Unions.

We are attaching for your information copies of two memos which we have received from Cricklewood, reference Br1/H.2.5.24. and Br.1/H.5.5.24.

We must say that we agree in the main with Br's remarks.

With regard to the Copper asbestos washers, the fitting of these is a standard practice. Our experience is that invariably on dismantling this joint the copper asbestos washer is in a damaged condition. At the same time we are reluctant to suggest that this washer be deleted as the obtaining of a quiet exhaust system is no little task in getting a chassis through its tests.

With regard to the suggestion of making the main silencer union nut in gun metal - although this may be desirable to avoid seizing of the nut on the thread, we feel that owing to the continual contraction and expansion effect at this joint it will be difficult to maintain a tight joint.
