Bentley III - Rear Brakes.
We send herewith N.Sch.5178 showing Girling rear brakes for this car.
The drum diameter is 12" and the width of the shoes 2.250".
The general construction follows that of the brakes already run 10,000 miles on 6-B-1V.
As we understand it, the only parts to be supplied by Messrs. Girling are the expander and adjustment units.
The expander housing is longer than the standard Girling piece, and although it is the same length as the housing for the front brakes it is not exactly the same as it needs no slots such as the front housing must have to allow for steering movement.
We have provided sleeves on the studs for the housing so that the nuts can be tightened down and spring washers substituted for the split pins as used by Girling. The studs need not now be locked in the housing and so the pins used by Girling are deleted.
The hubs are standard Bentley excepting that they will have the new deep teeth for the driving piece and that the flange for the brake drum is modified to simplify the shape of the drum.
The brake carrier and the drum are each attached to their respective flanges by six .312 bolts. They can be tried with .3125 minus 5 jig drilled holes (instead of reaming) as is proposed by HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH{R. Hollingworth} for the flanges of the axle centre casing.
