REAR END OF 'SS{S. Smith}' CHASSIS. 47400

It is very important that we should come to some definite arrangement as regards the carrying of luggage on the 'SS{S. Smith}' cars.

We have received a scheme from DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} shewing one rear wheel at the back with the luggage grid extending beyond the spare wheel. We do not consider this can be looked upon as a final scheme. If the customer is carrying only one spare wheel, it is too much to expect that he is going to lift off the whole of his luggage to get at it, in fact if the car carries two spare wheels, one at the back and one at the side, the customer would expect them to be accessible.

In our opinion, luggage grids projecting at the back are impracticable and out-of-date. To carry luggage it is essential to fit a luggage box. We suggest that if the luggage box is actually fitted into the body - by this we mean let into the back panel - we could provide reasonable luggage space on a full sized body and still carry one wheel at the back. We think it is worth a big struggle to keep the wheels off the side, and if we hope to do this successfully, we have got to provide a practical scheme for carrying luggage, and if we wish the customer to run with only one spare wheel, it must be readily accessible.
