ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. INSTRUCTIONS. 523 To Technical Committee Order No. Re Worm Gearing Customer's No. H101 Jan 8 1912 I submit for your consideration a form of worm thread which appears to be worth investigating with a view to use in Back Axle. In designing a worm gear apart from whether it should be straight or of Hindley type and apart from the question of lead we have choice of threads of small obliquity (14 1/2° - 15°) or large obliquity (60% Lanchester). The small obliquity thread suffers from interference but acts to better advantage than the other class which however has the advantage of finer pitch and more teeth, other factors being constant.
