The following Standardisation Sheet, No.22. Alteration No. 4153/A, dated October 13th. 1923, has been submitted to R.{Sir Henry Royce} for his approval:- Omitting rivetting. Substituting use of lock washers. It is proposed to discontinue the use of rivetting on bolts throughout the frame and on the bolts fastening rear axle tubes to axle box. Purpose of Alteration: The rivetting, to be successful, calls for a cleaner relation between end of bolt and face of nut than can be maintained in practice. As a result we get cases of nuts supposed to be rivetted which work off in service. E.g. gas tank stays, etc., also we get continual requests to shorten or lengthen bolts by .050. From observation we believe that where rivetting is done on the end of a taper bolt, the taper fit is frequently loosened, and generally the tendency is to loosen the nut on the thread. Some of the most vital parts of the frame structure are already fixed with lock washers only without rivetting. E.G. Rear spring pivot and 4th. crossmember. Engine feet. Centre joint of axle box. Suspension of sphere. Joint between axle box & torque tube. We propose to put this alteration into regular manufacture on Jan.1st.1924, unless we hear from Mr. Johnson and Mr. Royce to the contrary. The following is also a report which has been sent through for the attention of R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Oy. reference Oy2/E/101923:- "We submit herewith proposal sheet No.22. for the "omission of rivetting on frame bolts and on bolts "attaching the rear axle tube to the axle box.
