LIGHTER PHANTOM ENGINE - VALVE ROCKER COVER. SCHEME 763.

The scheme for the lighter cover that we have had up till now does not promise to be very desirable owing to the amount of riveting and hand work on it.

To get away from these objections R.{Sir Henry Royce} suggests using two pressings, one inside the other, the outer one having a flat lip to rest on the cylinder head facing, and the inner one projecting downwards to form the oil baffle and drip guard.

It would be preferable if the lip on the outer pressing could be folded back on itself to form a double thickness.

RECEIVED 7 JUL 1926 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}

Flat embossments should be formed on the outer pressing to which ferrules could be secured for receiving the cover fixing nuts as per sketch, and channel shaped features should be formed on the inner pressing to provide stiffening at the required points.

We notice that ventilation ducts have been provided on Sch. 763. on each cover nut boss. We do not see the object of this, and fear that engine fumes may escape from these passages, and be drawn into closed carriages.

The outer pressing may be tried in 16 SWG. and the inner one in 18 or 20 SWG. They should be riveted together on either side of the stiffening channels, and around the edges.

The use of two skins of metal instead of one for this cover may assist to some extent in obtaining extra silence of operation on the valve gear.

If however the use of sheet metal is found impracticable, the alternative is to make the cover out of a specially thin casting in the new magnesium alloy mentioned in RG{Mr Rowledge}3/W2726.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
