X7305. WOR{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY3/G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 28.5.30. FABRIC COUPLING. The first 95 chassis which were produced of the Phan. 11 type were fitted with the fabric coupling as arranged for Phan.1. In Phan. 1 there was not enough room to make the bolt in the spider arm so that it was bolted tight to the spindle independently of the fabric. This means that if the fabric coupling were to give way the bolt itself becomes slack in the spider and the nut which secures the part would become loose and the locking plate would be liable to slip out of engagement with the nut. When the fabric coupling was called for in a hurry on Phan. 11 we had to apply the existing scheme which had done quite good service on Phan. 1, but we limited the number, roughly to the first 100 cars, and produced a new scheme which made the bolt a cantilever to the spider, and made it impossible for either the bolt to come out or the nut to work loose, as we riveted the nut securing the bolt to the spider permanently up and fitted a castellated nut at the opposite end to secure the fabric. In view of the fact that if a nut comes off the original Phan. 1 form of coupling when fitted to Phan.11 the crankcase may be damaged and have to be replaced, I recommend that we should replace the 95 couplings referred to above as the cars become available at Depots.
